The main objective of the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) is to provide health facilities to the Central Government employees and pensioners along with their dependents. Validity of Central Government Health Scheme Card
- If the employee is eligible, then this card will be valid till the date of retirement of the employee
- The pensioner will continue to regularize his annual payment, consequently the validity will continue.
- In case the service employee is shifted to a non-CGHS covered area, the service card will be valid for 6 months after the transfer for the family members.
- This health scheme card is valid for medical check-up and hospitalization in all the cities covered under the scheme.
- These will not require a transit permit for treatment, such as life-saving or restricted supply drugs, high-value drugs, and for treatment in another city.

Adding or deleting Name in Central Government Health Scheme card
- If the main card holder dies, this card becomes invalid. Application for a new card is necessary for the spouse after receiving the pension.

Referral Process
- Beneficiaries in the cities covered under the scheme can avail OPD consultation without requiring any referral from a specialist in any government hospital.
- Card holders below 75 years of age can take OPD consultation from an empaneled hospital specialist after being referred by the Medical Officer or CMO in-charge of the wellness center.
- Referral to Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) is valid up to 3 OPD consultations for a month.
- The beneficiary will be required to report to the concerned health center, after consultation. The medical officer in charge of the CMO will support the investigation and release the medicine.
- Those employees who are above 75 years of age will be eligible to get direct OPD consultation without any referral.

- Civilian employees of defense paid from defense service estimates.
- Railway board employees
- Delhi police personnel and their families who reside in Delhi only.
- Widows of Central Government pensioners in respect of family pension.
- Central Government pensioners retiring with contributory provident fund benefits and their families.
- Pensioners of the Central Government and their families (except pensioners belonging to railway and armed forces).
